Firefighter Sean Dalton is mind-blown when Claire suggests a threesome. Watching her kiss his friend under the mistletoe is a turn-on. Being asked to share is like gasoline on the spark of desire. He’s shared a woman before, but he’s been crushing on his sweet and sexy roomie since she moved in. He’s not about to say no. Chicago police officer Max Devon isn’t new to the ménage scene, but he knows Sean has a thing for Claire and he won’t be the third wheel again. Been there, done that, has the scars to prove it. Still, he’s not immune to Claire’s charms. He’ll play her game, but only if he’s in charge. Then he'll know when it’s time to withdraw from the relationship. A night of blazing passion leads to more than one discovery. Sean is caught off guard by his feelings for Max, Max struggles to keep his distance from both his roommates, and Claire must make a choice—flee or stay. Trusting these two strong men with her heart and her life means endangering them and giving in to the belief she is theirs to protect.

Claire leaned in to Max, feeling his hard chest against her. Everything about him was a little rough. Gritty even. Which was why he was so good at his job. The people on his beat could relate to a cop who’d lived the hand-to-mouth existence they were trying to eke out. He was also good at getting underneath her skin. Her fingers traced his hard abs even as she admired his best friend to her right.
Sean wasn’t any slacker in the workout department. Leaner than Max, he had the body of a swimmer with broad shoulders and tight hips. On more than one occasion she’d been nearly late to class so she could get a glimpse of his bare chest as he came in from his morning run.
“I want to veg out in front of the television,” she said. Sandwiched between you two.  They hung out eating pizza and watching movies at least once a week since she’d moved in with them. It was one of the things she’d miss most when she moved on.
“Only if Sean or I get to pick,” Max said, using the hand that had been resting on her shoulder to mess up her hair. “Isn’t that right?” He punched is buddy in the shoulder. “I declare tonight a no chick-flick movie night.”
“Whatever Claire wants,” Sean replied, scrubbing a palm over his face. “After last shift, EMT school today, and then having to dress up like an idiot for the calendar, I’m beat.” Frown lines furrowed his normally happy face. Even as he’d been coaxing her into spending Christmas with his family, she sensed his mind had been on something else.
Her two roommates couldn’t be more different. Where Sean was sweet, patient and easy to talk to, Max had this whole strong, silent thing going for him when he wasn’t ripping into someone with his wit. Her gaze darted between the two as they traded good natured barbs. She couldn’t stay in the dark place the package and letter from her hometown had put her in. Not when he was determined to make her laugh and Max was heating her body to the boiling point.
Claire drained her cola in an attempt to cool her heated body. The way he played with her hair, his fingers dipping beneath her curls to massage her neck sent tendrils of electricity straight to her core. They were everything she longed for in a guy, all rolled into two delicious packages.  She wanted them. It was a plain as that. With the necessity to leave town looming, she was out of more subtle options for letting them know how she felt.

Can a vacation hookup change the course of their lives, or will competition sent their love up in flames?

He nodded as if they’d settled the matter. “Friends then?” Avery looked at the rugged hand he offered, wondering what it would feel like against her skin. “Okay.” She extended her hand and found out. The warmth sent small tremors through her body, building pockets of desire in places she hadn’t felt physical need in years. Her breath caught. Connor tugged on the hand he held in his, focusing her attention on him, then with his other he fingered one of her curls that had come loose from her ponytail. “How is it possible you’ve gotten more beautiful?” Pulling out of a 5G dive was easier than pulling out of his grasp, especially with the urge to sink into his arms so strong. Avery dug deep and snatched her hand from his. “I don’t think this is a good idea,” she said, though at the moment she’d have trouble saying specifically what was wrong with letting him continue to brush his thumb across her cheek. Connor shrugged. “Maybe not. But it doesn’t mean we won’t have fun doing it.” Being with him would be like putting her plane in a dive—exhilarating as hell and just as dangerous. She should send him on his merry way with a couple well placed sharp words. His offer dangled tantalizingly in the air between them. She wanted Connor. There was no sense in lying to herself about that. She also wanted a twenty-pound box of chocolate. In the long run, neither would be good for her.

E.J. Shortall is a homebred resident of London, England.
During her youth, she enjoyed getting lost in the worlds of fictional characters and writing their tales. Sadly, as she grew up and had to adult, life got in the way and making up stories was forgotten. Following a moment of inspiration in 2013, a new fire for literature was reignited. Deciding to put pen to paper to jot down the few words she had, not expecting anything to come from them, she quickly got caught up in her characters and the words started to flow. Those initial few words soon turned into her first full-length novel. With the encouragement of friends and family, Silver Lining was first published in February 2014. Now, several books later, she feels it is safe to say she loves ‘this writing business’ and getting lost in narrating fictional worlds has become her passion.
She writes captivating contemporary romantic fiction that will draw you in and leave you wanting more.
“I’m on one amazing roller coaster ride at the moment and loving every minute of it. I have met so many new and wonderful people, discovered new music gems to integrate into my stories, and learned so many new skills. I cannot wait to see where this journey takes me.”

“Because you’re famous, Nate,” I replied softly. Despite his eyes searching mine, looking concerned and unsure, his lips tipped into a small smile. I realised it was because it was the first time I’d called him anything other than his full name. That fact made me think that somewhere along the line our relationship had changed. It had morphed from just being trainer and trainee, helper and helpee, to something more. Was it friendship? Had we become friends? No, it felt different to that. Adam was my friend; I now classed Cassie a friend. With Nate, things felt different… more powerful.
But had he not thought that at some point in the beginning it would have been useful to say ‘Keep that fucking back straight, oh and by the way, I’m Nathan Oakes, world famous MMA star. Thought you should know.’
“I thought you were just an ordinary guy—”
“I am.”
“—feeling sorry for the ugly, fat butted burden on society.”
“You are not ugly or fat and certainly no burden on anyone,” he growled.
I smiled courteously but knew he was only being polite. “But you’re not are you? You’re not some ordinary guy. Why waste your time helping out someone like me?”
Making my way back over to the framed belts, I studied each one. Those things weren’t easy to win. I’d heard Adam and the guys ranting about enough boxing matches over the years to understand that only the best of the best won them.
“I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want this. I didn’t want it to have any bearing on how you saw me. Women throw themselves at me on a daily basis, Liv. They are willing to pay extortionate amounts for my time but they don’t focus. It isn’t personal training they are really after. They come to me for one reason only. To bed a famous MMA star.”
I barked out a laugh. “You have no worries there with me. I could care less what your status is. I don’t even get the sport. To me it seems like a bunch of guys rolling around together using the ‘manly’ sport as an excuse to feel each other up… no thanks. Not for me.”
He smiled, his eyes twinkling under the inset spotlights. “I can assure you, no touching up takes place in the octagon.”
I scoffed. “The octagon? What, four sides isn’t enough for you, you need eight?” I stood tall and crossed my arms over my chest. I needed to show him I hadn’t been affected by this news, yet in reality, it had rocked me to the very core. I was standing in front of someone famous, someone women across the globe probably lusted over. Women he could easily have and probably did. My eyes closed and my lips pulled into a flat line as I imagined some blonde bimbo on his arm, accompanying him to his fights and seeing him rip into his opponent with feral power. Afterwards, they would be together as she helped him come down from his fight high. I shook my head and opened my eyes, trying to rid myself of the unwelcome images.
Nate started laughing. The sight of it was so unexpected and beautiful that I found myself completely forgetting my unpleasant thoughts. My scowl was soon replaced by a quirk of my lips.
“You are a breath of fresh air, you know that, JB?” he said, drawing me against his firm body and placing a kiss to my forehead.

“What about that one?” Randi asked, grabbing Paige’s arm and motioning toward a tall cowboy standing a few feet away. He filled out his jeans exceedingly well, but he was too burly to be Paige’s ideal model.
“No. He isn’t the one.” She turned away to study the crowd and continued walking down an aisle past vendors selling Christmas ornaments and jewelry.
“Oh, that one’s nice,” Randi whispered, drawing Paige’s gaze to a swaggering cowboy making his way down a crowded aisle in front of them.
“Too bowlegged.”
Randi fisted a hand on her hip and studied her sister. “You’re terribly picky for someone desperately searching for a cowboy willing to have his butt exploited to benefit your career.”
Paige swallowed the mint she’d been sucking on and coughed, choking on the candy.
With feigned innocence, Randi thumped her on the back. “What? I’m just telling the truth.”
The glare Paige tossed at her only made her laugh. “Come on. The perfect behind has to be around here somewhere.” Randi tugged her down another aisle. The two of them stopped to admire a booth selling hand-knit scarves. “I think I’ll start my own list, like Santa’s, for all the good little boys. See,” she said, pointing to a cowboy who walked by. “Now that’s nice.”
“Don’t you feel the slightest bit of shame, ogling men’s backsides when you’re a married woman?” Paige took note of a cowboy with an exceptionally good-looking face, but when he turned around, he didn’t meet her criteria of what she was looking for in the jean department.
“No, I do not. I may be married, but I’m not dead. Besides, this is all in fun and I’m only staring at butts to help you. If you think I make a habit of gawking at men’s rumps, you are sadly mistaken. Dave’s cute little…”
Paige slapped her hands over her ears. “Too much information, Miranda Marie. I don’t want to hear anything about my brother-in-law that will make me embarrassed to look him in the eye the next time I see him.”
Randi giggled. “Okay. I’ll take it down a notch.” She walked close to Paige, categorizing the men the encountered as they continued meandering through the booths. “Nice. Meh, he’s okay. Oh, that one is nice.” She pointed to a cowboy walking past them and waggled her eyebrows. “Really nice.” Suddenly, she stopped and gaped at a cowboy standing across the aisle, talking to someone behind the counter at a booth selling a variety of tack. “Whoa, Nelly! He’s got to be on the top of Santa’s naughty list with a fine form like that.”

Alex turned when someone from behind tapped his shoulder. “Yes?”
“You two are the cutest couple. So you have a daughter in the program tonight?” a silver-haired lady, draped in strands of pearls, asked. “I’ll bet she’s beautiful, looking at the two of you.”
“We—” Morgan began.
“Thank you.” Alex interrupted, cutting her off. “Avery Blake is her name. She has a solo. It’s listed in the program.” He smiled brightly at the lady and then turned his gaze back to Morgan. She appeared surprised but didn’t contradict him.
He figured the lady didn’t need to know the intimate details of their life. It was enough that she considered them a couple. If others could see it, would it be possible for Morgan to see it, too? It wasn’t until that moment he understood how much he truly missed being a family of three and having a wife, after being forced to let go of the woman he loved. It proved tougher than he imagined. Now eighteen months later, he looked forward to a new chapter of his life. Maybe one with Morgan Marshall playing a major role.
